EY Comply: Regulatory Reporting Platform
Application Ideation and Design
Initial prototype for a platform that helps hedge fund and mutual fund advisors meet regulatory, tax, and financial statement reporting requirements
My role: UX/UI Design & Research
Project Length: 2 months
Tools: Sketch, InVision
THE OPPORTUNITY
The goal of the solution was to aid hedge and mutual fund asset managers with onboarding - which brings together investment risk data, transactions, and holdings data into a single tool. The initial build focused on workflow management, transparency, and accountability to lower reporting costs and streamline the regulatory filing, tax reporting, and financial reporting processes.
THE CHALLENGE
The software needed to allow fund managers and advisors to collaborate on workflows to complete regulatory filings. I met with EY Tax colleagues to understand their workflows, pain points, and the opportunities that exist in relation to the process of regulatory filings. The process that existed was very manual and didn't allow for much transparency - the solution needed to allow users to see the tasks associated with specific funds and the steps required to complete a filing.
Outcomes
After getting sign-off on my initial prototype from EY Design Studio colleagues and leadership, the design was put into development. The tool was adopted successfully after being trialed internally with EY Tax colleagues. The platform was further iterated upon after the proof of concept and eventually sold to Financial Services clients as a regulatory managed services offering.
MY ROLE
I worked on this platform as a proof of concept to pitch to EY partners involved in the regulatory reporting practice. I designed the wireframes and initial prototype for an internal MVP build for the proof of concept.
RESEARCH
Focus Groups
-
I ran focus groups with EY Tax colleagues to understand their current processes, which were very manual and time consuming requiring many disparate resources.
SME Interviews
-
I worked with Subject Matter Experts in Tax and Regulatory compliance to gain understanding of the space and get demos of competitive software in the marketplace.
RESEARCH IMPACT
After running a focus group with EY Tax colleagues working on regulatory filings, I learned a lot about their processes and gained valuable insights. Filings are highly regulated and need to be done properly and with oversight. There were many disparate data sources involved and it was painful and time consuming for these colleagues to keep track of all of the elements involved.
From these gained insights, I began wireframing a prototyping a solution to streamline their disparate workflow. This informed my design approach, which involved employing clean, simple visual design to keep the focus on the content and the workflow.
Low/Mid Fidelity
After doing an initial round of whiteboarding with EY Tax colleagues, I iterated on the whiteboard sketches and moved into digital prototypes.

High Fidelity
After creating a clickable low fidelity prototype and reviewing it with stakeholders, SMEs, and EY Tax colleagues, I got the go-ahead to move into high fidelity prototypes. I employed simple, clean visual design to keep the focus on the workflow.
